Understanding API Scores and California School Rankings

The Academic Performance Index (API) is a numeric index (or scale) ranging from a low score of 200 to the highest score of 1000 and its purpose is to measure growth of school performance from one year to another and to rank the school on an annual basis. The API is used to reflect a school’s or local educational agency’s (LEA’s) performance level based on the results of statewide testing.  The 2005 reports are calculated based on the results of 2005 statewide testing. The API was established by California’s Public Schools Accountability Act (PSAA) of 1999.  The statewide API target for all schools is 800.  A school’s growth is measured by how well it is moving towards/past that goal.  To rank a schools growth from year to year the school’s base year API is subtracted from its next year’s growth API.

The PSAA consists of: the API, the Immediate Intervention/Underperforming Schools Program (II/USP), and the Governor’s Performance Award program (GPA). The PSAA also set up an alternative accountability system for schools serving non-traditional populations, which now falls under the Alternative Schools Accountability Model (ASAM). Results from the Standardized Testing and Reporting Program (STAR) and the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) are used in calculating the API.
